Cultural excuses won't do

Excellent piece in today's Independent by Yasmin Alibhai-Brown, which illustrates once again why justifying archaic practices on the grounds that they are 'cultural' or religious is so very wrong. It's terrifying to think that this sort of crime is on the increase.

Comments:
It doesn't surprise me (sadly) to read about such murders in Middle Eastern/West Asian countries. But in the UK? I don't understand why people immigrate to a western nation, claiming to be in search of freedom, but are clearly unwilling to accept the price of their new-found freedom: the freedom of others.

You can't have it both ways. If you live in a free society you must accept that everyone is granted those freedoms -- even your own children. If you want to control people, you must remain in a society where you, too, will be controlled. It's that simple.

Yet again, it's a case of men doing what they like, and keeping women at home, illiterate in English and un-educated. Get these women into society; it's the only way anything will ever change.
